A Great Time to Be Alive

"When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?" (Psalm 11:3)

I have not been able to get this verse off my mind this morning. In a recent Bible lesson from Romans 13, I taught about our responsibility before God to pray for, support, and be thankful for our Government Leaders. Like many Christians, I have openly shared my dissatisfaction for those who are in positions of leadership. God revealed to me how wrong this is for several reasons.

First, the Bible says that this world is not my home! In Philippians 3:20 Paul says that our citizenship is in heaven! When I complain about gas prices, taxes, legislators, judges, etc. I am demonstrating a very deep attachment to this world which I am not even a part of anymore.

Second, Government is God's Idea, NOT man's! The Bible says that all authority is given by God (Romans 13:1-2). We are expected to be in Submission to the Lord as His Followers. Likewise, our Submission for God results in our heart of submission for the "ruling authorities" in our world. While this is a hard truth to practice when the current administration is not who we voted for, God will hold us accountable for this "Submission" when we face Him one day.

Finally, the main reason I need to have the right attitude towards our leaders is because my JOB as a "Citizen" of Heaven is to show people here on this "lost planet" how wonderful are the blessings, peace, hope, and LOVE of the God who died to forgive them! It is very hard to let my LIGHT SHINE for the Kingdom of God while I am complaining about taxes, gas, utility bills, slow traffic, pot holes, etc. etc.

Back to the question asked by the Psalmist: "When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?" We know that the United States of America is in serious trouble morally, financially, socially, etc. Instead of getting immersed in how "BAD" everything is, pray for opportunities to communicate to those living in darkness (spiritually) how wonderful are the blessings of God! The current conditions of this nation are not in any way a surprise to God. Times like these make for some interesting conversations about what is really important in life!

Maybe God is planning to take away all these "COMFORTS" we have consumed for so many years -- at the expense of seeking Him with all our heart -- so that we can once again seek Him. If our situation so far has not caused so-called Christ-Followers to make some serious changes, what else does God need to take away from us? The Righteous (i.e. Saved People) need to be wise in our Stewardship of God's resources so that we can have integrity when sharing with others how they can experience true JOY in these uncertain times. Believe me, God's Position is unchanged in this time. He is patiently searching for those who will SEEK Him, even if that means removing many of the luxuries we consume (i.e. cable or satellite television is not a necessity!) Something to think about wouldn't you say?
